Uses of Dairy Science CBF 08-09

In the 2008 – 2009 academic year the Dairy Science College Based Fee Committee recommended the following items for funding to enhance the academic programs in Dairy Science:

  • New state of the art feed truck with computer interface capability.  This truck allows for precision feeding and interfaces with the dairy’s record keeping software.
  • Replacement computers for the Herd Records Room.  The new computers will provide additional access and capability for Dairy Science students.
  • E.I. Medical Imaging ultrasound machine.  This device will be used in senior projects and for tasks such as pregnancy checking at the Cal Poly Dairy.
  • Wood Shavings for student activities.  Classes such as artificial insemination and the Los Lecheros Dairy Club use the livestock pavilion.  The wood shavings are essential to make the room usable.
  • Graduate student travel to scientific meetings was supported.  It is essential for graduate students to participate in these meetings to make contacts and discuss issues in dairy science research.
  • College Based Fee support for the Dairy Science Department’s Spring Banquet allows Dairy Science students to participate in this important event.
  • The College Based Fee allocation for the American Dairy Science Student Affiliate Division supports students who participate in the Quiz Bowl Competition.  Last year, Cal Poly’s team was the ADSA Quiz Bowl champions.

Uses of Dairy Science CBF 07-08

In the 2007-2008 academic year the Dairy Science College Based Fee Committee recommended the following items for funding to enhance the academic programs in Dairy Science:

    • Supplies for DSCI 470 Calf Management.  This new and innovative course was made possible in part by this allocation.
    • College Based Fee support for the Dairy Science Department’s Spring Banquet allows Dairy Science students to participate in this important event.
    • Travel to Western Spring National Contest. This contest was the first training event for students in DSCI 241.
    • The supplies purchased for DSCI 121 and 241, such as stethoscopes and thermometers, allowed students to have hands-on experience that would not have been possible without the support of CBF.
    • Travel for a student to the National Ag Leadership Conference.  This important experience allowed Cal Poly Dairy Science to be represented and provided the student with a unique experience.
    • The College Based Fee allocation for the American Dairy Science Student Affiliate Division supports students who participate in the Quiz Bowl Competition.  Last years Cal Poly team was the second place winner.
    • Funding for travel to the First Spring Jersey Show allowed students that have never shown cattle to gain experience.
    • Students were supported to travel to the Institute of Food Technologies annual meeting.
    • The College Based Fees were used to install a state of the art automated calf feeding system at the Cal Poly Dairy.  This system allowed students to gain experience with a leading edge technology.
